Guejar Sierra Hiking Routes - Tajos del Veredon

This is a short loop of 2hrs above the River Genil Valley. You can start this hike from the centre of Guejar Sierra village or use your own transport to drive further down the valley and start from the Maitena restaurant beside the River Genil. The hike is along the top of the hill that sits in the middle of the two rivers, staying on the northern side and high above the old tramway path in the bottom of the river valley.

By car: To reach the Maitena restaurant, when approaching the centre of the village look out for the signed righthand turn to the Guardia Civil/Embarcadero at the first fork (when approaching from Granada). Take this RH turn which will lead steeply downhill (stay on the main road and don't turn off for the Embarcadero) and then will go even more steeply uphill meeting a road where the only option is to turn right. Once on this road out of town, the road continues to lead out along the valley and after 3kms will lead back downhill to meet the river. At the first set of parking at the Maitena Restaurant you can park the car.

By foot: To reach the Maitena restaurant there is a footpath along the river which takes about 40 minutes. When approaching the centre of the village from Granada direction, just at the first bus stop that you meet, you will come to a fork in the road, the left hand fork winding around to the left uphill and the right hand fork disappearing steeply downhill. The right hand fork will be signed to Guardia Civil/Embarcadero. Take this fork and stay on the main road until you are passed a large red roofed civic building. Take the next right which should be marked Embarcadero/Restaurante La Fabriquilla. This is a tarmac road which winds down to the lake. Once at Restaurante La Fabriquilla, turn to go towards their parking area, but before the parking look out for a track leading along the valley and the river.
Follow this path and after x m it will go through the first of the old tramway tunnels, where you can look out for bats. This track then becomes a little narrower and continues along to the Maitena restaurant where once past the restuarant terrace you will rejoin the main road.

Alternatively, from the main square in the centre of the village, continue along Calle xxxx until it leads you out of the village and along the valley until it turns downhill to arrive at the intersection of the Maitena River and the Genil River.

Difficulty: Medium
Time: 2 hours to complete the loop from the Maitena Restaurant. An additional 40 minues each way from the centre of Guejar Sierra to the Maitena if walking along the footpath.

Directions from the Trailhead:

Now that we are at the Maitena Restaurant, we can see the ridge that our hike will take us on, if we look out for an old ruin just above the road. The hike is along the top of the hill that sits in the middle of the two rivers, staying on the northern side and high above the old tramway path in the bottom of the river valley.

To start, when approaching from Guejar Sierra on the tarmac road, 20metres before the small bridge into the terrace of the Maitena Restaurant, you will see a track leading uphill to the LHS. After 40m, the track splits and take the RH fork. On the second switchback, the path leads off to the left, not straight ahead which will just lead us to the old ruins of Cortijo Pua.

After 15 minutes of steep climbing, you will reach the acequia, and old water direction system to collect water for irrigation, and continue straight on through holm oak and olive groves. This will open out into a field with great views back towards Guejar Sierra and the Canales Reservoir at another old ruin Cortijo la Vina. Watch out here for dogs if you see goats.

Continue in a South-East direction along the ridge on an open path leading back into the valley. The path then starts to climb and continues to the Tajos del Veredon. Some broken signs point us in the direction of Las Herrerias/Las Fuentezeulas. After 45 minutes of total walking time we arrive in a rocky mirador (lookout) in the Tajos del Verdon where we can see the old tramway along the valley bottom. At this point, Alcazaba comes into view - it is the pyramid shaped mountain coming into view to our RHS when looking down the valley to the highest an furthest away layer of mountains.

The peaks of Alcazaba and Mulhacen are visible from the Cruz de Calar - Hiking Route - Guejar Sierra

The path now starts to descend lightly and after 15 minutes we will reach a stone ruin on the LHS. The path around here disperses a little but if you generally head towards the white farmhouse in the distance (Cortijo San Roque) on any of the terraced paths they should join the main path. Stay roughly on the same level as the stone ruins and this will lead you out onto a dirt road as you approach the farmhouse. One of the paths has a number of confusing sticks with arrows which it is best to ignore. After 10 minutes you will hit the dirt track. From here it is a 25 minute downhill path to the valley floor. At this point we turn right to return back along the old tramway route to the Maitena which we reach after around 20 minutes.
